Cool polizitteschi from one of the best of the trashy Italian directors of the 60s/70s/80, Damiano Damiani who gave us quite a few excellent films. Confessions of a Police Captain (1971), The Case is Over, Forget It (1975) and A Bullet for the General (1966). This one concerns a guy played by Giuliano Gemma, star of Requiescent (1967) and one of the most recognizable Italian actors of the period, as a guy who is targeted for assassination in the fallout of a crime that he didn't commit. Damiani was one of the more serious of the genre directors of the time and this is a very good film. Damiani manages to keep us on our toes all the time with a constant sense of urgency and background anxiety. And the final act is so good that it elevates the film into the upper tier of Eurocrime films.
