First of all, there are many things that are seriously wrong with this movie: Slaves in America are only white, they are treated pretty well, then they become pirates that are clean shaven, have clean and neat cloths and are more righteous than the pope. While that might all seem like it would make it a bad movie, it is not really. You have to view it with romantic and naive 1930s Hollywood glasses. It is actually well done with great sailing ships and cityscapes. See it as the naive and romantic fairytale that it is and it becomes quite entertaining … though, only light entertainment that is.

A lot to like here, mostly in the form of pirate hijinks and also Olivia de Havilland. I tend to dislike Errol Flynn, who can't help but smile his dashing smile no matter the scene, but he turns in some nice dramatic work especially in the first half.

Solid film. Entertaining with a charismatic performance from Flynn. Would have got a higher rating if it was 30 mins shorter as it drags a bit. 6/10

This film is a classic of adventure cinema.
