[Raindance '25] Dealing with the more than 20,000 Ukrainian children who have been forcibly deported by Russia for re-education is an interesting subject, but the director's insistence on being more emotional than expository means it never fully develops. As in his Oscar-nominated documentary, Evgeny Afineevsky uses animated sequences to show what cannot be shown in images, especially through the testimonies of the young people who participate in the film, and who narrate their experiences, often terrifying. It's a documentary that wants to be inspiring, but falls short in developing a relevant subject, dwelling too much on the emotional shock of the experiences that have traumatized a generation of Ukrainians.
