This proves that the hobbit doesn't need to be 3 movies.
Still a classic from when I was a kid - getting my kiddos initiated in it as well.

This is shorter than Peter Jackson's and has better voice talent.
Another entry in the history of attempts to bring Tolkien to the screen, with a clear target audience of pre-teens. With that in mind, there is something strange going on even by the usual standard for Middle-Earth. The tale of Bilbo Baggins and his adventures, related in an animation style that looks very dated, even for the period in which this film was made. The plot of the book is compressed, but very unevenly; cutting from a troll cave to entering Rivendell being just one example. The meeting of Bilbo and Gollum mostly drags along, ending abruptly with another jarring jump to the whole company in the open air, having escaped the goblins. There are numerous others, together with too many passages in the form of songs with poor melodies, irritating rather than entertaining. One thing in its favour is that it isn't made for adults in 3 parts, lasting 9 hours. Still, if you have children, my suggestion is that you read them the book and forget all about this version. By the way, I wouldn't bother with the Peter Jackson films either.
