"Viva Verdi!" was the last of this year's 50 Oscar-nominated films that I hadn't seen yet. And the saying “Save the Best for Last” doesn't necessarily apply here. The documentary about Casa Verdi—a retirement home for opera singers and musicians—is quite charming, but that's about it. In any case, it didn't manage to hold my attention for the entire runtime. That's certainly also because opera isn't really my thing. But I'm convinced that the subject would have been better suited to a short documentary. Then, however, the song "Sweet Dreams of Joy" wouldn't have been eligible for an Oscar nomination. In that sense, everything was probably done right, even if I wasn't completely won over.
The song at the end was beautiful. All of the music was. I think it is pretty incredible that Verdi made a retirement home for musicians. Seems much nicer for people to live then in American Nursing homes. They all seemed so happy too.
