I didn't recognize any of these Marvel characters. Barely any action. Great story though.

What’s crazy is this movie was made fifty years ago and we’re still talking about what is a man and what a woman is. Let people be free to see themselves however they want to see themselves. I didn’t like the movie; it was hard for me to follow, but it seems to be in parallel to the events happening today. I have a theory, they, people not born in America, voted for an administration that resembled home. We’ve been fighting for civil rights for fifty years and they voted to send America back to a time when there were no rights. There’s an old cliche: you can take a person out of the ghetto, but you can’t take the ghetto out of the person. What I’m saying is they run from their country only to vote to turn America into their country. The man said, Do you know what the nazi do to people like you? Our government has targeted people in this country relentlessly and we talked about it till we turned blue. I believe people don’t see themselves as who they are but as the bourgeoisie. And now… the fight continues.

A true masterpiece, Héctor Babenco's direction is striking and creative, telling the story in a masterly way. Although set in Brazil and with Brazilian supporting actors, the film is entirely in English, which doesn't compromise the naturalness of the performances. The performances are exceptional, especially William Hurt, whose interpretation is brilliant, his dynamic with Raúl Juliá is captivating, while Sônia Braga stands out in an imaginative and escapist parallel core, delivering a memorable performance. The cinematography is wonderful, contributing to the film's unique atmosphere.

Couple of wonderful performances, especially by Julia. But I'm preternaturally disposed to dislike film-within-a-film frameworks (and this one was dreadfully dull) and I couldn't get over the staginess of some of the dialogue. Wanted more from it.
