The original title of the film is Sommarnattens leende.
This one is interesting because it shows Bergman in a different light than usual—not just compared to the films I've seen, but also to the way people talk about him. Typically, his work revolves around ethical, philosophical, and theological questions about God, but this film takes a different approach. It’s more comedic, more focused on character exploration—their desires, their actions, and the lengths they go to in pursuit of what they want. And it works. It really does. It’s not the same Bergman, but it’s still undeniably Bergman. His masterful direction, his striking cinematography, and his sharp writing are all present. The characters are great, and though much of the film is a slow buildup, gradually revealing their motivations, it all culminates beautifully by the end. That final payoff lets you see these characters for who they truly are. It’s a great film—different in tone from his usual work, but still distinctly his. Highly recommended, 7.88/10
I prefer Bergman when he's questioning God and existence, but this lighter comedy was still wonderful. Permutations of relationships within the small cast take their time to develop, so that when they're all thrown together the sparks fly. Definitely not what I expected, but would want to revisit this in the future.
