Hard to be objective about this one, as it's wrapped up in some nostalgic movies my father and I shared back in the day. Regardless, I still think it's an underappreciated film when placed in context of era and genre. I've watched it numerous times over the years; it doesn't demand too much from the viewer, but delivers on entertainment every time.

Revisiting Rollerball proved to be a revelation; when I last saw this I thought it was boring, but oh, the folly of youth! What I once mistook for a slow pace I now recognize as a deliberate, chilling build-up that places this film right up there with some classic sci-fi. This satirizes society in the way only the best sci-fi can, by deconstructing the soullessness of corporate rule and the manipulation of the masses.
I do vaguely remember watching this at a cinema. In its time, it was clearly trying to be a social commentary about the evils of corporate greed, but the depiction of violence became the be-all and end-all. Depressing; not very attractive then or now. On a rewatch, age has not served its look very well.; a definite glimpse into how the 1970s defined the future. And computer centres. James Caan tries hard to expand his character, but the script doesn't allow him to go beyond one dimension. Is it science-fiction? Well, it was set in the near future.
A classic about a brutal sport in a near, dystopian, future. While the movie has not aged all too well, it is nonetheless a classic that should be seen with he eyes of the time.
