According to imdb there was a lot of things going on behind the scenes, like political stuff and controversy. It was Waynes directing debut and some say the movie suffers from his inexperience at this task. In my opinion, whatever you think about what happened at The Alamo for real, it is a great movie. Just don't see this as a history lesson because I am sure it's not watertight on that front. And the final battle alone is worth watching this. Thousands of extra, horses and stuff. That is real movie making.
*Falacies of the Useless* ✓Script (history) and Performances: [0.4] The film has some good actors, protagonists, but the extras was hurting the eyes. The story is very detailed, there's only one problem, that's John Wayne's ultra-nationalist point of view. The man manages to be racist, sexist and still misrepresent the whole story by turning the Mexicans into the 'invading forces' in this confrontation across Texas. It would be enough for him to be more impartial, but that's impossible for John Wayne, who is still a great actor hahaha ✓Theme(Direction):[0.5] The film wants to present accounts of the war for Texas in the 19th century, with a little bit of humor enhanced by the director, John Wayne. As stated above, it is the North American vision, it does not guarantee 100% historical fidelity. ✓Costume:[0.8] ✓Makeup:[0.5] The clearly fake blood and the well made-up women in a siege was unreal. ✓Edition:[0.6] The editing could have delivered a smaller film, without diminishing the wealth of information, as the pace was quite slow. ✓Aim of the Film:[0.8] ✓Photography:[1.0] ✓Art Direction:[1.0] ✓Visual Effects:[0.5] ✓Sound:[1.0] Grade: 7.1
This movie is a version of history written by the winners (in the end of the war, not the battle) and glorified by Hollywood, i.e. John Wayne. The characters are cartoonish, many scenes and actions just don’t make sense at all and I sometimes expected that they just start dancing and singing. Furthermore, the movie is over 2,5 hours long, though namely the first hour could have been shorted to 15 minutes as it is mostly a pain to watch through it until the story gets to the battle of Fort Alamo. As entertainment, it is OK, but not as a historic reference of what happened. For that, watch rather the 2004 version with the same title. That is way closer to the real events.
first watch agreat powerful emotional at time s great acting and score but some pacing issues recommended for ages 14 and up
