It's probably exactly what you expect it's going to be if you read the description of the movie. The movie is well done in capturing exactly what it was going for, did a good job showing both sides of the fence in the challenges of growing up and social pressure, but also the horror story that the parent of a kid like this goes through.
What did I just watch
I found it very hard to watch. The characters are not likable. I only recommend it, if you like to be put in a bad mood by a very boring movie.
This is still the best movie that Catherine Hardwicke has directed, and it's insane how that hasn't been topped.
Gritty vibe and raw 2000s. The performances are probably the strongest element here: emotional, and very believable. Even when the story leaned a little cliché, the acting gave it an honesty that kept me engaged, and while it can feel a bit sensationalised at times, like certain moments were set up for maximum drama rather than realism, the core story remains relatable. There are heavy themes at play here: generational trauma, abuse, cycles of dysfunction. Even if I couldn’t personally relate to all of it, those underlying struggles resonate on a universal level. The characters are well-developed and layered, with some truly powerful moments of growth and conflict. I think what makes it work is how readable they are, you can really feel what they’re going through. The cinematography does a solid job of following their journey, even if I wish a few things were handled with more subtlety. The soundtrack complements the tone nicely without overpowering it. Overall, Thirteen isn’t perfect. It sometimes feels a little too “movie-like” rather than fully authentic, and that broke my immersion in a few places. But despite that, it’s a powerful, emotionally charged story with plenty of depth for anyone willing to look beneath the surface. It even has the kind of richness that might make a rewatch rewarding. It’s really crazy how much trouble some clear and honest communication could fix.
