Forget the fact that it's an old black and white film, and just watch it. Great film, especially if you like films about the Titanic.
Excellent Film. Forget about it being Black and White! Just enjoy the film.
_A Night to Remember_ recounts the tragic tale of the sinking of the R.M.S. _Titanic_ on its maiden voyage after it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Based on Walter Lord’s bestselling book, the film follows various _Titanic_ passengers and crew throughout the sinking, along with the rescue efforts (or lack thereof) of the _Californian_ and _Carpathia_. This is simultaneously the film’s greatest strength and weakness; as it allows for an expansive overview of events, but also makes it difficult to get to know individual characters. The model work and special effects are pretty good (for the time), and give a real sense of scope to the tragedy. However, the score is rather bland and doesn’t have much emotional resonance to it. Still, while _A Night to Remember_ has some weaknesses, it delivers a compelling depiction of one of the greatest maritime disasters in history.
This is a much better film than the James Cameron over-blown epic. The events that led to the disaster are told with a certain amount of detachment; perhaps the style could be called docudrama. Still well worth a watch for the history and sense of the social climate at the time.
The adaptation in the 1950s must have been impressive. Today it is not defending itself in a few places, but it's still not bad.
