Sure, historic accuracy and realism is non-existent. Costumes, especially the tights are questionable. The original story is dumbed down. Many characters are portrayed as dimwits. Even famous Erol Flynn is more often a jolly and always smiling Australian surfer boy than a serious rebel. The political aspects of the story (Peaceful, honest, nature-loving Germanic Saxons vs. alien romanized, scheming Norman conquerors. The "communist" idea. The moral conflict: helping ordinary people by becoming brutal thieves) aren't fleshed out. This is clearly not an English forest. The comedy parts are entertaining but silly and certainly not hilarious. This is not the drama the original story used to be. But you can't rate a 90 year old movie by today's standards. It's never boring. The skirmishes are choreographed well. The score is great. The colors and stages are awesome. Technicolor never disappoints. The number of actors they hired for most scenes is astonishing. The romance isn't even cringe. This is a great adventure movie. Watch it like a fairy tell (say Peter Pan), watch it with your kids, watch it like you would watch an old pirate adventure movie (any swashbuckler movie really) and you won't be disappointed. Btw: the best character in this movie is clearly Prince John. What a great actor Claude Rains is!
I'm sure this was great back in the day but today it is just fine.
I'd never seen it before and really loved it. Literally spectacular, in that it was quite a spectacle! The plot and characters were thin, in a literature and drama sense, but very colorful and fun. The effects and stunts were amazing; I won't even say for their time, it was just impressive to watch a lot of the athleticism on the screen! We watched it for family movie night and all four of us had a blast.
Even though it was one of the earliest colour movies, this movie is still a classic. It is the classic Hollywood Robin Hood fairytale story that is ever since a reference for all subsequent movies on the subject. Many have tried to be better since, few have succeeded. Find one of the restored versions that, even if they are overcoloured at times, are still much better to watch than the faded original version. Have fun.
The most classic and trapeze version.
