It’s very funny that people were trying to act like there is no way a 19 year old could have directed this movie when it is essentially a big budget student film.
i liked how it referenced source material but it felt more like found footage, rather than an actual story
While it creates incredible atmosphere and tension I have to admit I didn’t understand it. Due to my lack of understanding that undercuts any of the positive aspects. Would Not Recommend
The experience my boyfriend and I had leaving the movie theater and not finding the exit sign was far more unsettling than this film. Before going to see it, I took the time to search for the original 4chan post, read about it on Reddit, and even watched Kane Parsons YouTube series. Still, the movie didn't scratch the itch I expected it to. Backrooms is a nothing burger of a film that doesn't really go anywhere and relies solely on the odd feeling liminal spaces cause. Aside from being visually striking, having a sound design that creates a very uncomfortable atmosphere and the phenomenal acting of both Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, the plot itself doesn't stand on its own. It's shallow and with few solid explanations. "But does it have to explain the lore in its continuous entirety?" If that wasn't the plan, maybe A24 should've left as it was. With the exception of a haunting ending scene, Backrooms leaves a door open for a continuation that I don't plan on seeing. Not for another two-hour reminder that not every creepy screenshot is asking to become a movie, anyway.
I was not familiar with the concept of backrooms and i don't know how close it is to the source material, but I had a great time watching this movie, it was interesting, mysterious, tense and kept me invested and wanting more, so solid mystery movie for me. As for the horror parts, I wouldn't call it horror if I am being honest.
