For as schmaltzy and on-the-nose as the romance angle is, this movie truly lives up to the title in terms of loving the game of baseball. It's not a *great* baseball movie, but the game does indeed get the most romantic treatment outside of Kevin Costner and Kelly Preston smashing faces together. Also, Sam Raimi's range as a director needs to be highlighted. Darkman, Army of Darkness, The Quick and the Dead, and A Simple Plan were his directorial filmography in the 90s before this.
This was a relatively pleasant surprise. The story was pretty cliched but the baseball scenes were very well done. I'll credit this to Sam Raimi's direction. The love story was standard stuff but the ending was extremely sappy which was unfortunate.
An absolute gem of a sports movie. People may find it corny but for me it's one of my favorite movies of all time. Of course there are "better" movies but for some strange reason this one touches my heart. A man playing against old age one last time to reach the highest peak, to make himself immortal. For a sports fan there is nothing more poetic than that.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time and my very favorite Baseball movie. I have loved this movie ever since my dad introduced me to it as a little boy. Baseball was my favorite sport growing up and I played it every year. Kevin Costner was made to play this kind of role. I love that Sam Raimi directed this too. I thought he did such an excellent job coming from such a great horror background. I love the way they mix the baseball and love story together. This movie will definitely never get old and always be a favorite of mine.
Work and love: life. That's all.
