*Balthazar* is an outstanding French crime series that stands out through its unique blend of dark mystery, emotional storytelling, and subtle humor. The show manages to combine gripping criminal investigations with deeply human moments, making it both thrilling and surprisingly heartfelt.
The story centers around Raphaël Balthazar, a brilliant forensic pathologist who works with the Paris police to solve complex murder cases. With his extraordinary ability to read clues from the dead, Balthazar often uncovers details that others would miss. At the same time, he is a deeply complex character, still haunted by the mysterious death of his wife. This personal tragedy drives him to seek the truth not only in the cases he investigates, but also in his own past.
One of the greatest strengths of the series is the fascinating personality of Balthazar himself. He is unconventional, witty, sometimes provocative, yet incredibly compassionate when it comes to the victims whose stories he tries to uncover. His dynamic with the detectives, especially the evolving partnership with the lead investigator, creates many engaging and emotional moments throughout the show. The cases themselves are well written and often take unexpected turns, keeping viewers guessing until the very end. At the same time, the series never loses sight of the emotional weight behind each investigation, giving the victims a voice and adding depth to every episode. Overall, *Balthazar* is a captivating crime drama that offers far more than a typical procedural series. With strong performances, clever storytelling, and a truly unforgettable main character, it is a must-watch for fans of intelligent and character-driven crime shows.
This french show is a mix & match of other similar shows (Forever & Harrow come to mind). Great premice, very good season 1 and 2. Season 3 started to drop in quality (scenario). Season 4's first episode is the end of the series, don't bother with the last two they pivoted in the worst possible way. **Spoilers below**
In season 2, if you are used to the will they / won't they and whodunnit genre, you get pretty early that Maya might be the actual serial killer. Especially if you consider that this show was written [long] after The Mentalist. Furthermore, the fact that Balthazar gets back with her the night he was going to finaly have his date with Helene for no reason whatsoever after she left him when he was not feeling well in previous season is completely out of character. Add to that the first episode of season 4 and you get that somewhere in season 3, some writers tried to create a twist thinking they were cleaver but ended up being unbelievably stupid and destroying the show's foundation.
