Ils pensaient être les premiers...

Science-Fiction & Fantastique
Synopsis

Sometimes an amazing show gets cancelled, and you just can't wrap your head around why ... then there's shows like this one. Absolute drivel ! So, soooooo, slow. Nothing much ever going on. Mostly they just fight about why there are standing around and what someone said. First season is slightly better, has a little more mystery to it ... then second season looks like it could be good, but falls flat, tries to do too much (compared to how little used to be going on, so it's relatively "too much) and worst of all, ends on a complete and utter **nothing** at the very end. Second season was mostly about "unlocking your true potential", but once again all they do is mope around, waiting for something to happen and ... that's it. This is like a show that is slow because it focuses more on the philosophical side, but doesn't, by staying so dumb and superficial that you end up with an empty fart of a story. Just all around bad, actors were good, no complaints there. Do not waste your time, stay clear. There are waay better shows out there. I'm genuinely mad I watched this to the end.

Hey, we are going to take on this massive undertaking and be first on Mars! Wow, awesome! So a small crew that are highly trained and focused astronauts and the most efficient spaceship ever built? Merde non! We'll have a crew that are all hot tempered and horny with plenty of old and new relationship drama and a ship with enormous rooms and corridors that can fit multiple armies! Oh. Okay. Anything else? Yes! We will have gravity and magic! Yay! And a super advanced AI! Aha! The AI has multiple redundant and fail safe systems to ensure the mission success? What? Non! Trea absurd! Do my eccentric billionaire self look like I'm made of money? ... But the crew will be professionals and have training and a clear chain of command? Non! One captain should be enough. They will figure it out. The journey is the destination! Mystery! Adventure! Stolen plotlines! Idiotic premises and even more idiotic science! A franchise! All shot in glorious cinematic letterbox widescreen with gigantic black borders everywhere it is played!

Missions episodes are about 20 minutes a piece, so the plot is tightly wound throughout.  It doesn't have the usual lull between the premier and finale.   The show debuted in France on OCS City in June 2017, September 2019, and December 2021.   MaLigne TV launched in 2003 using ADSL technology to deliver television over internet lines until being rebranded as Orange TV in 2006.  OCS (short for "Orange Cinema Series"; owned by Orange S.A.) was launched on November 13, 2008, originally an exclusive add-on to Orange TV subscribers.  By 2017, it had become a premium group of channels consisting of OCS City, OCS Choco (later merged with OCS City to form OCS Pulp in 2023), OCS Max, and OCS Geants.  Later, in 2023, these channels were acquired by Canal+ and integrated into their own suit of channels and streaming services in France. In the UK, all 3 seasons of Missions debuted on BBC Four and can be seen on the BBCiplayer.  In the USA the first 2 seasons were shown on Shudder but taken down before the arrival of Season 3 never to be seen by an American audience which is a shame since I was eagerly anticipating the 3rd Season.   It's one of the Scifi shows that asks interesting questions and takes things in thoughtful directions, which some may think is interminable, but French culture is different than American culture.  Stories are served up a certain way, and I felt the show had a thoughtful plot even if it does take a certain direction in S2 that may feel different than the first season in some ways.   S1 and S2 digital copies can be bought in the USA at the moment.  I'm hoping S3 will be released eventually.

Overall this isn't quite worth the effort. It's a French sci-fi drama. Don't expect Hollywood. It's more of your philosophical take on human nature juxtaposed with a take on today's billionaire space-race. If it was just seasons 1 and 3, I'd have been a bit happier. Season 2 doesn't hit the desired notes for me at all. 6.5/10 3/5
