This show scared the crap out of me as a wee 9-year old, but did no such thing as I watched it now as an aging adult. However, I still love this series for its characters, situations and imagination. The nostalgic charge that this series had given me still remains, even though it is not the fright-filled wonder it was in my youth. I can definitely see how this series planted a seed in the mind of X-Files creator Chris Carter. It is truly a wild ride, with it's B-movie horror and almost comic book delivery. Their cheap production values and formulaic structure kind of wore on me by the end, but again I still love them for their imagination and their goofy charms.
Darren McGavin is _Kolchak: The Night Stalker_ in ABC’s supernatural crime drama. The series follows investigative report Carl Kolchak as he pursues strange and unusual stories involving vampires, werewolves, witches, and other creatures of the night. McGavin gives a great performance and a number of interesting guest stars are featured; including John Fiedler, Dick Van Patten, Tom Skerritt, Richard Kiel, Keenan Wynn, and Erik Estrada. However, the show has an odd tone, as Kolchak isn’t so much a true believer looking for the supernatural as an open minded reporter who stubbles upon supernatural creatures and has to learn about them. But as interesting as some of the creatures tend to be, they’re usual undercut by cheap costumes and bad makeup effects. _Kolchak: The Night Stalker_ is entertaining and delivers some thrills, but it also has its problems and was cancelled after one season.
