A more than worthy follow up that illustrates all the ways New Orleans continued to be ignored and left to suffer, with Katrina’s effects still in play on top of more avoidable tragedies allowed through callous greed and neglect. Had to take a break with my Lee watch after the Tyson doc but this was a great way to get back to it. Lee’s empathy and heart perhaps shines clearest in his docs, making his subjects feel seen, heard, and comfortable while giving some of the ones at fault enough rope to gang themselves combined with some incendiary and unapologetically emotional editing. He allows the victims to hurt. He agrees and lightens the mood without taking the attention from them. The sad thing is how another decade and beyond on how many things haven’t changed or have gotten proudly, maliciously worse. Lee could make another doc about this today and still be relevant- Orleans exemplifies the American government’s neglect and cruelty in the name of money, laziness, and utter lack of care for those they think beneath them and theirs.
