Lol at the country vicar sitting up in bed naked in his draughty, uninsulated, cottage on the windy Essex Fens... gotta give the fans some Tom tiddies... That being said, this is Victorian gothic melodrama, anyone expecting Jaws crossed with Anaconda will be sorely disappointed. I felt this was a fairly well done adaptation of the book. It was heaped with praise on publication, yet when I read it I was a bit underwhelmed. This captures that feeling. The elements are there, the sum of the whole is just a bit 'meh'...

Watchable enough series but I’m not sure the entertainment value repays the time invested. Victorian period drama focusing primarily around 6 key players and their somewhat complex relationships. Sadly, no real depth or tension and definitely no serpent LOL. The book in told is pretty good, I won’t be in a rush to find out.

[tv+] Translating the symbolism of a novel onto the screen, especially when they establish a web of relationships, is too complicated. The snake that is the fruit of original sin at the same time represents the end of a Victorian era based on fear. There is so much material at stake that the series falls too short, wrapped in a fog not only formal but also narrative, which finally opts for gothic romanticism. It's not a bad decision, but it oversimplifies a much more complex story.
