En 1985, elle est élue Miss USA ; elle est la première hispanique à gagner ce titre.
Après avoir été l'épouse de Carl-Eduard von Bismarck, un prince allemand appartenant à la famille Bismarck, elle débute dans le métier d'actrice dans les années 1980 sous différents pseudonymes : Laura Éléna Harring, Laura Martinez Harring, Laura Éléna Herring et Laura Herring.
