En 1947, elle obtient l'Oscar de la meilleure actrice dans un second rôle pour sa composition dramatique dans Le Fil du rasoir (1946) réalisé par Edmund Goulding.
Elle est notamment connue du grand public pour son interprétation de Néfertari, l'épouse de Ramsès II, interprété par Yul Brynner, amoureuse de Moïse, Charlton Heston, dans le film *Les Dix Commandements* (1956) de Cecil B. DeMille.
