A bumbling, slow, insufferable radio-play-on-film. House of Darkness sends the usual messages for the majority of it's 90 minute runtime, but doesn't offer an explosive punch of an ending to make it all worthwhile.
I can already see the "yasss!" Twitter threads of Kate Bosworth, Gia Crovatin and Lucy Walters all covered in blood
but outside of the very narrow messaging here, there is literally nothing of worth to be found in this movie. A complete miss, but I applaud the attempt to try and do something different. If you'd like to see something in the similar vein of "radio-play-on-film" but good, please check out The Vast of Night. Different genre, but totally nails the dialogue first direction that this movie attempted to land and failed.
A hilarious yet suspenseful dark comedy backed by strong performances by both leads. It's an extremely slow and dialogue driven burn, definitely not what I was expecting at all, but has plenty of laugh out loud moments. It also features a limited cast and the whole thing takes place mostly in one big old dark house, however thanks to the great performances and the chemistry between characters, the film is never boring. The majority of it plays like an awkward dark comedy before turning up the tension towards the second half. Justin Long as lead character pull it off masterfully. I really mean it when I say this thing is really slow and dialogue-driven, surely not for everyone, but for me it was a genuine thrill ride.
The awkwardness of Justin Long's character was almost nauseating. But since I had some idea what the movie was about, about an hour in, I was just begging for the payoff to finally happen.
Stick with it. The movie begns slowly but everything leads to a satisfying and very creepy end.
started out in like shut up blubber blabbing about nothing. he was so awkward. worst acting for him. 30 minutes in still blabbering so turn off couldn't take it anymore
