A blend of family drama and investigative procedural, this film takes a long-winded approach to reach its focal point. I only knew the title, and there’s no way I could have figured out where the story was heading. However, I found both the mystery and the drama to be rather shallow and muddled. Despite the attempt to elevate the taste of this production above typical mainstream Japanese films, ultimately the emphasis was placed on star-studded cast members at the expense of substance, resulting in lengthy and unimpactful sequences with even a few over-the-top melodrama theatrics. From a Western perspective, the exploration of identity closely tied to family name and social status can be intriguing, although the film never delves into it with sufficient depth.
