This movie is weird. It's not great but it's not as bad as the rep suggests. It's kind of nuts. Like...crazy. As in, in the first five minutes we almost see boobs and....the back of Will Smith's sack? How weird was that?! Plus I don't even know where to begin with how this movie "has fun" with the race issue. Odd choices. Watched this for We Hate Movies. really hoping they shed some light on the weird amount of near nudity in the first five.
I loved the cast but the film is a bit of a jumble for me. I understand the approach and why it was made to appeal to Gen Y, but it all felt a bit cliche and try-hard. Strangely throughout the film I saw glipses of An American Tale - Fivel Goes West and Life. Don't even get me started on the mechanical tarantula.
Frankly, I do not understand the very negative comments about this movie. It is a steam-punk Western. Surely, if you expect a classic Western, you’ll be disappointed. I give it that there are a bunch of effects and ideas that are a bit over the top, but that is what the movie is effectively meant to be. The effects are well made, the acting is great, the cast is exceptional and the movie is just fun to watch as a steam-punk Western. Enjoy and do not overthink it. It is a phantasy Western.
7/10 Weird, crazy, stupid but fun. Great cast, story was crazy, weird, fun and stupid like the entire movie. You need to watch it to understand this. Can recommend this if you wanna watch a crazy movie and turn of your brain
I felt entertained by this. It is a very bonkers film, though it actually works stupidly well in my opinion - the steampunk theme helps it of course. Will Smith and Kevin Kline are a good pairing as West and Gordon. Kenneth Branagh (Arliss) is amusing, I rate his character's design too. I will say the effects around Smith and Kline haven't aged gracefully, but for everything else around them it still looks quite nice. I enjoyed the train shenanigans in particular. Salma Hayek (Rita) is kinda pointless in this, she's basically just there for gratuitous sexual reasons. The film does also try to cram in an (obviously positive) message regarding racists and the such, which doesn't really fit and isn't as developed as could've been. 'Wild Wild West' is at its best when it's being amusing. A brainless watch. I'd, personally, recommend it - though a lot of people would evidently disagree with me.
