Interesting idea but it didn't grab me.
It's like a kid writing a novel: charming but way in over its head. This anthology tale of prisoners telling stories in an Ivory Coast prison would've looked good on paper but was hurt by the quality of the interpretations.
[SEFF] Like Scheherazade, the protagonist's life depends on his keeping his story all night long. The director manages to bring in a closed space (UMAC prison), some of the main characteristics of the African tradition. Beliefs, superstitions, legends, politics, violence... This capacity for synthesis is the greatest success of a film that has a beautiful cinematography, intensity and forcefulness in the images.
