Well, I guess this is made more for the ones who know the game and therefore the story. I was completely lost, you probably could watch it standalone but I never got into it. It felt more like watching someone play a game. Considering it is 15 years old it still looks good but they sure wanted to make a point of how well they could animate hair. Those huge swords looked a bit hilarious but, hey, it's fantasy so it is what it is. I can imagine why people who like the game do also like this movie.

I think I liked it more when I saw it 20 years ago but some stuff still holds up. Definitely made for people that played the game first, so try to get that experience done first!

AND NOW IN 2020 AFTER WAITING 23YEARS TO PLAY AND FINISH "FINAL FANTASYVII" REMAKE "PART1" 'GAME ON PS5' WHICH HAS BLOWN MY FRICKIN MIND AND MADE ME CRY FOR HOW SUPER SUPER SPECIAL THIS IS, NOT JUST TYING IN TO THE ORIGINAL GAME BUT LINKING THE GAME STRAIGHT INTO THE AWESOME AMAZING MOVIE AS WELL. WHAT NOW MAKES IT ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL IS I OWN THE ULTRA RARE UNRATED COMPLETE VERSION OF THE MOVIE ON 4K STRAIGHT FROM JAPAN (IN ENGLISH) AND THE FFVIIR GAME WHICH BOTH TOGETHER IS THE STUFF DREAMS ARE MADE OF. JUST TO MAKE IT EVEN MORE SPECIAL I HAPPEN TO HAVE ACTUALLY BECOME REALLY.....REALLY GOOD FRIENDS WITH THE VOICE ACTRESS WHO PLAYS "AERITH" IN THE GAME (AS IF IT COULD NOT BE ANYMORE AMAZING THAN THAT). THIS EPIC MOVIE TOOK 13 YEARS TO MAKE, AND EVERY SINGLE HAIR YOU SEE IN THIS MOVIE WAS DRAWN BY HAND, NOW THATS DEDICATION AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL. THIS MOVIE IS A TIMELESS MASTERPIECE AND I DON'T KNOW ABOUT A FINAL FANTASY THIS IS MORE LIKE A "CONTINUED FANTASY" A "FINAL FANTASY REBIRTH" IF YOU.

Do yourselves the favour of getting the long version and undubbed - "dilly dally shilly shally" just completely ruins everything. It still makes little sense to people who have never played the game, but we who did any number of times deserve the long edition. Apart from that, best animated movie Square ever did - XV was pretty but lacked plot, and that is where Advent Children excels.
