Definitely one of Sono’s lesser works, but at least it’s not as terrible as “Tokyo Vampire Hotel”. Murata’s character offers some truly hilarious gags, but other than that it’s the tired reiteration of stuff that we have already seen countless times in Sono’s previous movies. Excess and gore became pure routine. Stay away from the 4 hour “Deep Cut”, it’s just a watered-down version of the theatrical cut with nothing new worth remembering.
Sion Sono goes total art funny games Vienna aktionist trve dark triad nihilism and a cut of peer pressures and a squirt of Stockholm syndrome. A bit uneven, pacing is off with timeline jumps and there is a slow dip in the middle - but it picks up again to an intense and satisfying finale. While there are several good performances (and a few lesser so) Eri Kamataki as Mitsuko in particular does a great job that only grows stronger as the movie keeps going. Far from perfect but it is quite the ride for that duration so I give it an eight with remarks.
