In this film, Willie joins the war effort not to become a hero, but simply to serve his country. However, he’s frustrated when his assignment keeps him in his hometown, where he’s recruited as a trainer, far from the front lines. The army sees this as his way of serving, but the townspeople, whose sons are overseas fighting, don’t understand his role. Things take an unexpected turn when Willie accidentally finds himself behind enemy lines, and he ends up becoming a hero after all. The running joke about the good conduct medals and promotion is hilarious. The film nails the cringeworthy moments of that situation, blending humor and heart. Though there are some silly moments, overall this is an excellent movie.
