In reading some of the reviews of this movie I think that some people thought that the movie is about cancer - I don't believe it is. The film begins with four very broken people. There is no hope and there is no direction. An unexpected development brings the four together under one roof and something amazing happens. There is a beautiful shared human experience that gives the film a completely different texture. The movie is no longer about death, it is about living. The beautiful final scene is all the proof that you need. I thought that the director did an excellent job telling the story. We weren't bogged down by the details of each characters story as that would take away from the large message. There were no trips to the hospital or seeing anyone in a twelve step program. I'm still unsure about my overall feelings on this film. For stretches of the film I found myself annoyed with the oddities of the various characters and some of the quirky interactions. At other points I felt for the desperate situations each of the four leads were in, and I could sympathize with their versions of coping. And then there's the final scene...it was an absolute emotional gutting. Even though I found myself not always connected to the characters throughout the film, this final scene hit hard and hammered home the messiness of living, and how fleeting it can be. I ugly cried through the credits (which are presented in a perfect way) and felt drained afterwards.

Frankly, I think the Girl-Gets-Cancer-and-Falls-In-Love movie genre is a little bit overplayed.

Great movie. I was pleasantly surprised at just how good it was!

It’s unfocussed at times and more then a little messy, narratively speaking. However, it packs an emotional punch, so for all it’s shortcomings it is still worth sitting down with.
