It has a good basic idea, some great actors, and the details are done with great care and realism. But with all the walking and time the movie spends with it, there's very little actual character depth. It feels like the movie has to rush through so many moments that it can't spend much time on any of them. The scene with the girl walking from guy to guy telling them about the other people really looks like an awkward and quick way to force some back story onto the viewer. The result is that some of the supposedly most dramatic moments fail to have the impact they should have. Not a bad movie, just not great either.
The escape of prisoners driven to extremes from a Soviet death camp, incredible in itself, becomes only the beginning of such a long and disastrous journey home. The path is, in addition to the characters of the fugitives, the main epic hero of the story, where only a fool will see Russophobia. Farrell came out with something like an authentic Russian urkagan
