Fassbender and Mortensen as Jung and Freud is casting that should not work this well - and yet it absolutely does. Their intellectual tension, that slow unraveling of respect and rivalry, is the most compelling part of the film. Keira Knightley goes very big with Sabina and opinions are split on it - personally it felt slightly over the top in the early scenes but she earns it as the film progresses. The problem is it's all so restrained. Cronenberg of all directors making something this cautious feels like an opportunity missed. Fascinating but never quite as electric as it should be.
Had this movie on my list for quite some time. This was very boring and bland. The Russian accent and acting by Knightly was super cringe. The character of Otto is only brought in so Jung can justify sleeping with Sabina. Otherwise pointless.
There's a lot of pretty interesting stuff in here about psychoanalysis. But overall I've never felt a Cronenberg movie was so stylistically bland. There are certain times where an almost clinical level of monotonous filmmaking could kind of work. But overall while I'm not a fan of many of Cronenberg's movies, I can usually appreciate the very unique approach which he brings to any kind of subject, that it felt like he just completely left out of this movie? Maybe that was the point? Some points for the boy-fight between Jung and Freud. ""Oh sorry, my wife booked me a first class stateroom""ù Killer burn.
I was most interested in wanting to watch this, but I found it extremely boring. Sadly, I think I was put off by Kiera Knightly’s performance; it was cringeworthy. It had great potential, but sadly fell extremely short.
