All the moral complexity and historical sensitivity of a Disney sequel. At least Judi Dench is brilliant. As usual.
Surprised at some of the negative comments on this page. Personally, I thought it was a royal treat. Shot through with a healthy dose of irreverent humour, this 'mostly' true story highlighted a piece of British history I knew very little about. Splendid performances from the cast, especially from her majesty herself, Dame Judi Dench. God bless you ma'am.
I actually enjoyed this movie a lot. You can of course not believe everything historical but it's nice to hear about Abdul in general – I'm not sure how well know he is outside of the (former) British empire. Judi Dench is amazing as always.
Victoria & Abdul is a historical farce that didn't have the common decency of being even the slightest bit ironic. Watch Viceroy House instead.
I was looking forward to this because of Judi Dench, because of the newly discovered (2010) historical source material, because of its central character (Regis Victoria). But, its opening credits tag line sets the tone, "This is a true story - _Mostly_". Great performances (do yourself a favour and watch anything Adeel Akhtar is in), amusing situations, and heart wrenching gravitas, as only Dame Judi can bring, when called for. This movie did not disappoint. I give it a 7.5 (really good) out of 10. [historical drama]
