An unnecessary and inferior sequel, _Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz_ is a cartoonish kid’s film with no real aspirations. When the Gnome King reclaims the Emerald City to get his jewels back, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion seek out Dorothy’s help and take her back to Oz, along with Tom and Jerry. The original cast returns, and are joined by Jason Alexander as the Gnome King. The slapstick comedy is more miss than hit, and the characters are played more broadly now they they’re freed from the source material (i.e. the 1939 musical). Also, the songs are rather weak and seem forced. _Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz_ delivers a few laughs and entertaining (particularly for younger viewers), but lacks the cleverness and creativity of the first film.
