The Toxic Avenger stays true to the absurdity of the original while still inventing its own identity. Peter Dinklage is great as Winston, though less convincing as Toxi. The film leans too heavily on CGI when it would have benefitted from greater practical effects, and it could have been more effective in the offbeat humor that made the franchise iconic. Still fun, if low-brow B-horror comedy is your jam.
*"Are you triggered?"* No, not at all. Compared to the original–who was hard to watch at times because the comedy was so dark–this had no balls. I wish I could say it was funny regardless but I only really laughed whenever Kevin Bacon was on-screen. He absolutely steals the show, really fun performance from him. Aside from Bacon's scenes the comedy felt forced and badly written. Because of this I was never sold on Peter Dinklage in this role, he's an excellent actor but he can't save these jokes unfortunately. The stuff with the son was heartwarming at times but it brings some clumsy tonal shifts as it's more serious and emotional vs. everything else which is cheesy. As a result it becomes awkward whenever Jacob Tremblay is on-screen, it's like he's in another movie. My biggest disappointment are the action scenes and the kills, they're so rushed and cheap. I was so disappointed the legendary diner scene from the original barely lasted a minute here and the same can be said for every other action scene. Kills last a second, bodies break like pudding and there's way too much ugly CGI. What made this alright at times were the characters, they're all clowns so it's super entertaining. The Killer Nutz are a highlight even though that concert should've been way more epic. Cool intro with the animation at the beginning. Catchy needle drops. The makeup and prosthetics for Toxie look amazing, great work there.
What the hell was that?! 30 minutes of mindless rubbish
It reminds me of 80’s movies. Love it.
This was so close to being great. You have the humour of Troma, the amazing practical effects, great soundtrack and the good/bad acting. This definitely felt like a Troma movie with a bigger budget. However the bigger budget and aiming for a more mainstream audience meant they relied a little too much on CGI and it was missing that Troma sleaze that they're known for. I'm hoping this brings in more Troma fans
