Image 4.5 / 5 and sound 3/5 . Great John Ford western, needless to say more right?
As soon as Clem arrives, the movie improves a lot and stops being an ordinary Western. Her and Doc's story offer at least something more than the trite redemption story and the traditional battle between good (the law) vs evil. The movie features gorgeous scenery, poetic slow scenes, an exciting frontier town, wild horse chases (poor horsies!), a great surgery scene and the exciting OK Corral firefight that's as short in this movie as it allegedly was in reality. Good actors, the famous title song and eternal characters like Wyatt Warp and Doc Holiday make this a classic. The story has not much to offer though.
One of my favorite Westerns. Fonda turns in his most mature performance to date (even if he is wearing quite a silly Arby's hat) and Ford's direction is austere and magnificent. One I hope to return to again and again.
