You can have good actors, good writers, or good directors. Sometimes you can have a writer who's a good actor and sometimes an actor can be somewhat okay director. But when the actors act like writers and act like directors and act like they can put a movie together with all their friends acting like they aren't a bunch of simple adults who play pretend for vast amounts of money beyond what normal people can imagine for similar activity, you get a movie like this. There's a reason why you feel unsatisfied at the end of this movie. Actors can't write, they act. They can act like they can write, and they can get so taken with their own performance as writers, they can convince themselves they can direct too. But ultimately an actor's goal is to have you look at them, and they have no idea of how to successfully END the story without everybody dying, or symbolically dying through divorce or separation. This is a reflection of their personalities and how they imagine regular people live their lives. This is why they fail to understand their own audiences and get involved in subjects that are well beyond them. For example, wasn't the world better before actors and Hollywood people felt they needed to insert themselves into politics? Washington DC is nothing but Hollywood for ugly people, and the industry centered in Hollywood only employees around 300,000 people and all, yet those people in that region of Southern California exert an inordinate amount of influence over the culture and they wish they had more over political outcomes. But they are just actors and thus they only play pretend and have no idea what it's like for regular people to make decisions with their lives, they have to imagine what it's like. Remember, for over 5,000 years, actors and prostitutes were in the same social class. They were allowed wealth and infamy as they traded off their dignity for spectacle. They were never allowed any sort of involvement in Civic life or politics because everyone knew they could be paid to simulate, very accurately, human emotions. It has only been in the last hundred years with the rise of Hollywood that actors have gained social prominence beyond the information of their self-exploitation. This may all sound a little heavy-handed for this movie, but once you watch it you'll see what I mean. You should always sneer at a film written and directed by its lead actors. During the indie movie boom of the late 90s early 2000s, this type of narcissistic self insert by actors as writers was a common thing to see. But the reason why nobody remembers them is because they sucked. Now all Hollywood properties are products of low-brow self inserts of people with mental problems into well-established and beloved stories. If you really like these actors, you might like this movie. But the people these actors are playing, are disgusting and basically the worst people in the world. Because they wrote it and directed it, this is their projection of themselves on to what they believe of normal people. Even if you do like everyone in this entire spectacle, if you're a regular person, you will step away from this feeling offended by this portrayal.
I wanted to love this movie more than I did. After all, the cast is fantastic - so many great actors. The script plodded along at times and it just really never landed for me. follow me at https://IHATEBadMovies.com or facebook IHATEBadMovies
