I was truly transported by this film. Despite the long succession of depressing events it somehow managed to be uplifting.
The Homesman This film tackles social issues of women and mental illness in a confronting way, unlike any Western I've seen. Some amazing shots to be seen. However, the pacing was a slog, the plot was rarley engaging and the shift of focus was a mistake. 6/10 #NicksMiniReview https://t.co/VZ7WCVLjGZ
Wonderful performances, great script directing, and some big names in the cameo roles. It does a great job at cutting through many of the lies we perpetuate about the Wild West, taking away the glamour and forcing the viewer to see the sickness before the medicines of the 20th century, the cruelty of incest and the difficulty in coping. It also leaves you wondering about the religiousness and forced isolation of women after a certain age. 31 then was an old maid versus now a young woman is just getting started. The only reason it's not a 9 or better is the weather. The location has to be far enough south, Nebraska territory most likely to be 5 weeks there and then 5 weeks back to be "back in time to celebrate the 4th of July" would put the length of the trip we observe from the end of April to end of May. It's highly unlikely they would encounter as much snow as the script suggests. While a minor detail, it struck me as wrong, and even without that, at night the temperatures could still get frosty. I guess they decided to add the snow and have it explained in the movie. Or perhaps they didn't think the explanation was enough. Anyway, very interesting. Worth a watch. 7.2 without the weather inconsistency. 8.7 if that has been presented better.
I’d marry Mary Bee Cuddy in a heartbeat. Slow, gritty, and totally unglamorous westerns are my favorite type of Western. Great performances all round.
