Synopsis
Paris, 1828. Sur le boulevard du Crime, au milieu de la foule, des acteurs et des bateleurs, le mime Baptiste Deburau, par son témoignage muet, sauve Garance d'une erreur judiciaire. C'est ici que commencent les amours contrariées de Garance, femme libre et audacieuse, et de Baptiste qu'elle intimide et qui n'ose lui déclarer sa flamme. Mais aussi ceux de Nathalie, la fille du directeur du théâtre, qui aime Baptiste, et de Frédérick Lemaître, un jeune acteur prometteur, qui entame une liaison avec Garance, tandis que cette dernière aime aussi Baptiste en secret.

Loved it! The scenes were so rich and the dialog so poetic many times. In addition the story was very engaging and the actors top notch! One of the greats!

Epic melodrama, and my favorite of the poetic realist movement. Arletty plays the enigmatic and unattainable Garance, around which the lives and misfortunes of four men revolve, and all the relationships orbit around the theater on the "Boulevard du Crime." It's dramatic, poetic stuff, in the most French way possible--the kind of thing that doesn't always appeal to me, but it all works here. I love the wordplay, the emotions, the yearning, and the tragedy of it all. To think that it was all made in the midst of war and occupation is truly mind-boggling.
