On rewatch I think I feel pretty much the same about this film as I did originally, it isn't going to win many awards but it damn entertaining. With much violence. Also, I'd like somebody to make a film from the point of view of the picts/celts/germanics/whomevers that the Romans invaded without any rooting for the imperialistic colonial empire.
Based on the legend of the Ninth Legion, Centurion is an action-packed historical thriller. After a devastating attack by the Picts a Roman governor sends the Ninth Legion into the northern territory of Britain to destroy the Pict tribe; but the campaign goes badly, leaving only a handful of survivors to struggle to avoid capture and make it back to the Roman lines. Starring Michael Fassbender, Olga Kurylenko, Imogen Poots, and Dominic West, the film has a solid cast. And it’s beautifully shot, with sweeping landscapes and authentic looking costumes and sets. However, the violence is a little too gratuitous in its gore, and it takes a while for the story to get going. Overall, Centurion is a fairly run-of-the-mill action film and doesn’t really have much ambition.
Blood, guts, strength and honour... the director is in his element here. Realism and tension tell a tale of hardship fighting for what seems important. 6/10
"My name is Quintus Dias. I'm a fugitive of Rome, and this is neither the beginning nor the end of my story." Centurion isn't anything special but just the right movie to watch during a dayshift where nothing happens at all. Somehow a dvd was in the dvd player over here and I had never heard about Centurion before. So with nothing else to do, this was the way to go. And I must say, it was entertaining. Olga Kurylenko was a great mute wolf warrior, Michael Fassbender always has his charm and I always seem to enjoy seeing Dominic West show up in a movie. The story isn't anything special but there was enough action and blood to keep me entertained. So if you are bored on a rainy day and you want some fun historic entertainment, Meil Marshall's Centurion isn't a bad choice!
A theme that gave great movies ruined...no action and no suspense.
