It's hard these days to remember what a fantastic comic actor Hanks was, but this is a film that would not work without his performance, which completely sells the idea of a grown-up child. The idea itself would suggest a focus on comedy, but what also makes the film work is that it isn't focused on gags and laugh out loud moments - rather the film plays a fine balance exploring both the fun of the character getting his wish, but equally what has been lost. The film is rightly lauded as a wonderful reminder of the inner child in all of us, perfectly encapsulated in the classic piano scene, but its the focus on character moments, such as Josh's first night alone, that lend the film a poignancy that elevates it to more than simply a clever concept.
Big was charming and lots of fun. Even though it was primarily a comedy, it still had some very sweet and touching moments sprinkled throughout. Tom Hanks was brilliant acting like a twelve-year-old adult and one of the better roles I've seen him in. I loved the floor piano scene. The extended edition did seem to be a bit too long for my taste though.
Big is such a fun, charming movie. It’s essentially what you get when you take all of the good stuff from Shazam and amplify them by a good few cranks. It’s such a feel-good movie that just puts a smile on your face whenever you watch it. It’s a film that really makes you love Tom Hanks as an actor, where he shows off his aptitude to play in both a dramatic role and a light-hearted, (literally) childlike one. And if there’s any scene that perfectly captures what I’m talking about, it’s the giant toy piano scene. Really, if you can’t/don’t want to watch this movie, please do yourself a favor and watch that scene on YouTube. 9.2/10
Brilliant comedic performance by Hanks, and just a wonderful feel-good atmosphere throughout the entire film. The kind you’d watch to cheer yourself up after a bad day - charming and wholesome, with a few giggles along the way.
Super cute movie, much classic!
