Synopsis
Le Seaview, un super sous-marin atomique conçu par l'Amiral Harriman Nelson, subit ses derniers essais dans l'océan Arctique, sous les glaces du pôle Nord. Pour superviser ces ultimes tests, le submersible accueille à son bord les représentants du gouvernement : le sénateur Parker, grand pourfendeur du projet, le Dr Hiller, psychiatre, et l'Amiral Crawford. En plongée, le bâtiment est soudain victime d'un éboulement de glace et le retour à la surface offre le terrifiant spectacle de la glace en fusion sous un ciel qui parait s'être embrasé. Lorsqu'il parvient enfin à joindre Washington, Nelson apprend que la « ceinture de Van Allen a pris feu », faisant inexorablement augmenter la température jusqu'à rendre bientôt toute vie impossible. Dans leur course pour sauver la planète, l'Amiral et l'équipage du Seaview vont devoir affronter les attaques de monstres marins, de sous-marins ennemis et même d'un saboteur.

watching in 2022. Women in high heels on a sub was hilarious to watch. The shark was the star of the movie.

Classic sci-fi Doomsday adventure. Interesting premise is presented with some questionable science and outdated effects, but it's still pretty good fun.

I hadn't seen this movie since the late 1970's and didn't remember Barbara Eden and Frankie Avalon being in it. I did remember Walter Pidgeon and Peter Lorre being in it. Del Monroe was only actor in both the movie and in the TV series. Overall a good movie and it might be one of the earliest ones to later become a TV series. If I recall correctly the main plot this movie was also the plot of one of the TV episodes. I noticed that in both the movie and TV series characters would sometimes smoke cigars or cigarettes in the submarine which is not allowed in submarines today and might not have been allowed back when the movie came out.
