Bette Davis (very good performance) plays a willful Southern belle in antebellum South who runs circles around a very miscast Henry Fonda who lacks a spine to stand up to her. While I appreciated the Davis performance, the screenplay never provided a justification for Julie's behavior and I found myself to be a little bored with the bursts of obnoxious behavior. The sideplots involving an outbreak of yellow fever and multiple duels definitely didn't add anything to it all for me.
Plays very much like a smaller scale, black & white precursor to Gone With the Wind, being about a spoilt southern ho who thinks she can get guys to do everything they want until they grow sick of her shit. Performances are charming, Bette Davis is luminous. Just a nice movie. But not a masterpiece. 7/10
