Leather spacesuits with big collars, an awesome spaceship and Skittle-colored alien landscapes. In other words, a cool looking movie. The story and acting are a bit of a letdown, though. As you'll likely see in many other reviews, this seems to be the birthplace of Ridley Scott's "Alien", but it's clearly just an inspiration, as it's not nearly as interesting story-wise. "Planet of the Vampires" is also quite slow. The twist ending is fun but borrowed from the (spoiler coming) first season Twilight Zone episode "Third From the Sun". "PotV" also has one of the coolest movie posters I think I've ever seen. Time to get one for the Man Cave.
How does this have such a great reputation? The set design and visuals are gorgeous, but I could barely watch it. It was so dull. Not for me.
I know this has quite the cult following these days, and I was hoping I could join the cult, but this just didn't quite work on me. There is lots of cool going on in this, and Bava's style is unmissable, hell it feels like this and Danger Diabolik were filmed back to back. But the cool style was not enough to keep me hanging on. The story just bored me a bit...
It's surprisingly boring. I think they were going for tension, but it was just slow. Nice costuming, interesting sets and models.
After a pair of spaceships Argos and Galliot in the near future land on the mysterious planet Aura, the survivors go berserk and attack one another. After regaining consciousness, they find no signs of life on that planet. But they believe there are formless creatures in there trying to control their minds. Wonderful balance of science fiction & horror making one pretty tense experience. While the story and characters are stunted, it has so many interesting ideas and enough surprises and stuff to look at. I really dig the overall mood of the film. It's beautifully lit and designed. The effects are way ahead of their time. Using gorgeous set of colors to establish the atmosphere extremely well. The suits, huge set pieces, special effects, everything in here is stellar. It's got good bits of action and violence too.
