I get people who say this is exploitative. I get people who say they are willing participants putting on a show. I get people who think this is an intimate, caring, nonjudgmental character study. No matter where you fall, this is a captivating look into people all too real and larger than life all at once.

Knowing of this documentary only in passing, as faint whispers of cult status. What built in my head, as is with the unknown, was "what could be the appeal?" After watching it, I still have that same question. What is the appeal? Most documentaries will have a point or, at least, endeavor to make you think. _Grey Gardens_...well, there's no real reason. We're dropped into the lives of two odd people living an isolated life. The doc begins as bizarre, then becomes boring, then sad, and repeats that cycle. By the end, my only thought was "what did I just watch?" I simply don't understand why this was made or why there are people who like it. My only idea is that it reminds me a lot of early John Waters, and Harmony Korine movies; that is to say, it's terrible camera work recording weird people doing crazy shit. A part of me presumes the primary reason this has a cult following is because some people think it's funny. Like with so much else for me, I am far more interested in understanding why anyone would like this. Not recommended. Very boring. Pointless. I did, however, like all the kitties; maybe that's why everyone else likes it too.
