In general, it felt forced. Let's pretend Tony Hinchcliff didn't' literally facilitate fascism. Let's pretend being cliche is the same thing as going "hard" or being creative. Let's get self-referential because even though "free speech won" the auspice of cancel-worthy backlash hasn't receded. I never found the flow but for a couple individuals. The problem with this being the roast of Kevin Hart and not "a roast" is the same "ick" or "who cares" feeling you get from watching most of what he's produced over the years. The ambition outweighs the voice and the cynicism or matter-of-factness about the profit motive betrays the spirit and genuine good will and hope people are extending to him. I think comedy at its best is speaking truth in surprising and subversive ways. Here, I'm not surprised. I'm not laughing in spite or solidarity. I'm thankful Chelsea Handler and Pete Davidson took their job seriously. I'm thankful Regina Hall and Sheryl Underwood brought creativity and danger to what verged on becoming a slog. I will never, ever, be the kind of person who's like "that joke went too far!" My criticism isn't some lazy out of touch stupid opinion about what constitutes comedy. I'm let down because it didn't feel real. i just read Kevin has ignored backlash and touted viewership and RT scores. Right. Of course he's going to do that. It matters more than being funny, plugged in, or saying something so true and creative it's undeniable, right? That's why another formerly-on-the-path-to-legendary Kat Williams is starting to feel solidarity as his gossipy rants stop going viral. What are these comics who become brands supposed to reach for in a multi-polar over-saturated market of grasps for your attention devoid of your motivation or real ideas? Can you blame them? I still feel like, yeah, you kinda can. You're asking me with every bad joke to lose more faith and connection to what may have initially turned me into a fan. The work of evolving your voice in concert with the times and your circumstances should feel harder than checking attention boxes and squeezing name recognition for all it's worth.

Katt Williams literally saved the roast. The only ones funny was Regina Hall and Katt.

I actually had some laughs lol

The Roast of Kevin Hart was good, but it definitely suffered from being a bit too long. Like most roasts, the best material is genuinely hilarious, but there comes a point where the same punchlines start getting recycled over and over again. There are only so many jokes about Kevin being short and only so many digs at his film career before the redundancy starts creeping in. A few too many participants meant the runtime got padded out, and some sets felt less essential than others. That said, there were still plenty of great bits throughout. The format works because talented comedians can find creative ways to attack the same target, and when the jokes land, they land hard. I had a good time with it and laughed quite a bit. It's just not one of my favorite roasts. A tighter version probably would have elevated it considerably. Rating: 3/5 – 75% – Worth Watching
