This is a nice movie about your average Joe meeting a nice lady. Ernest Borgnine gave a really great performance. There is a lot of subtle things he does to really make this feel real.

I loved this movie. It was sweet and all too realistic. Being of Italian decent, the sisters reminded me of home...... classic. Loved Ernest Borgnine playing the sweet and sensitive Marty. A love story that is well deserved.... a great watch! On my favourites list!

This won 4 Academy Awards in 1955 including Best Picture and Best Leading Actor. It is one of those rare films where Hollywood decided to look at the average rather than look for what they thought was sexy, alluring, pushing the envelope when Playboy magazine was becoming an entire empire and industry. it's also at a time when smart women were starting to be vilified and sexy, evil or dumb, and the leading female role is educated. thoughtful and working (as a teacher, it's still the 1950s). It's short compared to movies of today, but it's heart warming. Ernest Borgnine is phenomenal and his career was launched with this movie.

Marty is a sweet, modest film about a lonely butcher who meets a woman just as overlooked as he is. It is not flashy, and it is not particularly cinematic. The premise is simple, and the film never tries to stretch beyond it. Ernest Borgnine gives a sincere performance, but you can see where the story is headed early. It does not move much after that. For a film so focused on connection, it never quite connects.
