I liked this documentary, and I do love Noah’s music. But the production and execution felt very amateur, as did the editing. The kind of project I’d expect to come out of the editing bay of someone still in film school, or fresh out. For this to be a Netflix production, and about one of the biggest musical artists on the scene right now, I think the director or editor actually fell short of expectations. Also, the story needed a problem and it felt contrived to put his mental health as the sole subject of the film’s issue. Bc nothing detrimental happened to Noah during the filming process. He talks about his mental health and is vulnerable, which is beautiful. But it felt like the doc was a lead up to his Fenway Park performance and that went off without a hitch. So… it was informational, but narratively lacking in story elements that make it something interesting to follow. By comparison, Taylor Swift’s Miss Americana and The Eras Tour was better in its story structure, as was Gaga’s 5 Foot documentary. This needed polishing and a few other elements to take it out of the amateur league for me.
