When we wanted to watch a film in the ethics class of my media designer school, I suggested it. The teacher only said: "Oh! This is not a film that we should see here as part of the lesson". In retrospect, I think he's right. On its own behalf, the film is already something special and has a high art content. The depiction of the birth of a God is almost conceivable in the form shown. Very interesting movie, but also quite disturbing and exhausting. You should take your time, then have to get involved and rather not watch the movie after a hard day at work.
The story of creation is presented with singular impact and artistic imagination. The mythology surrounding the brutal death of God and the birth of Mother Earth, who gives birth to the Son of Earth, reveals an infinite cycle of existence with oppression and violence until extinction, and then rebirth. The film portrays this journey in a visceral and brutal way, full of metaphors and symbolism, expressing intensity and fury. Its structure is reminiscent of theater, offering a striking experimental proposal. The rustic images, marked by contrasting black and white, are accompanied by strange and enveloping sounds, creating a cathartic, explicit and disturbing experience.
One of the strangest film experiences I've ever had. I've seen it twice and I still have very little idea what it all actually means. Also almost any scene in this movie goes bizarrely well to Rock The Casbah, which definitely adds to the experience. So stick Begotten on and get ready, to Rock The Casbar.
_Begotten_ is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that most people will never see, and of those few who will, most will hate it, and I understand why; this movie is not for everyone, hell, I never hear anyone talk about it - the people I've sat down to watch it must have thought I was crazy. The movie is commonly compared to _Eraserhead_, only more extreme; and that's fair, because, really, what else can one relate this to? Only recently do we have _mother!_ - which is similar in theme, but the likeness ends there. So, what is _Begotten_? It's a silent movie - no dialog, no music, minimal ambient sound (e.g., wind) - and it's filmed in harsh, high-contrast black and white; like, "what the hell am I looking at" level. Is it a gore movie? An art film? I honestly don't know. Who is it for? Almost no one. You'd have to love nightmarish black-and-white horror, and also have the patience to let the vague images work their magic. I think people who are fans of industrial, particularly Skinny Puppy would love this. Lastly, this is a film you need to be in a mood to watch, there is nothing fun about it. This is a journey best taken in the dark, alone.
If you enjoy convulsing bodies in a wet/dirty/muddy area with a dash of suggested violence presented in an early David Lynchian style then this is the movie for you. Not reading what the movie was about beforehand it pretty much passed me by, watching the first 4 credits made things a bit more clear to me but I'm not about to rewatch this... movie to see all the deeper meanings in it. The 15 to 21-year old me would have enjoyed this more and really used his brain to find meanings in it (probably with plenty of chips and a girl next to me but hey... times change). The older me prefers Mother more ... even without chips and dips.
