In the 17-minute chamber drama “Beyond Silence,” a deaf woman named Eva (Henrianne Jansen) tells her story of how she was sexually harassed and abused by her professor. The recipient of these words, which are also conveyed by an interpreter, is the female dean of the university, who is clearly unable to do anything about it. And that is precisely the problem the film seeks to highlight. Although everyone should be aware of the Me Too debate by now, the situation has hardly improved. Thanks to the excellent acting in this short film, both the pain and helplessness of the main character and the inner conflict that the dean must feel due to her inability to act are conveyed. However, the film is merely a glimpse into the situation and does not necessarily explore new territory thematically. Nevertheless, it is certainly important to tell these stories. As long as nothing changes at every level, attention must be drawn to the issue.
