[Fantasia '25] Tackling the courtroom drama for the first time, Takashi Miike presents a true story from a clear point of view that initially reflects the media-reported perspective of a teacher who allegedly harassed one of his students for being a "halfu," a Japanese man of mixed blood. While more interested in analyzing the parallel public trial than the actual court case, he adopts a less nuanced perspective that undermines credibility, with a portrayal of some characters that seems somewhat manipulative. The complexity of the case is blurred into a perspective that ultimately feels too flat in terms of the development of the events.
